Sierra Rutile was established in 1971 and has grown into the world’s leading natural rutile producer. With roots in mineral sands mining dating back to the 1960s, the company has operated through decades of growth, redevelopment, and industry leadership, including its acquisition by Iluka Resources in 2016 and current expansion efforts such as the Sembehun Project. Sierra Rutile is now 100% Sierra Leonean owned since its acquisition by Leonoil Company Limited in October 2024.

Sierra Rutile operates a large-scale, multi-deposit mineral sands mining operation in southern Sierra Leone and is the world’s largest producer of natural rutile. With over 50 years of operating history, the Company is a leading global supplier of high-grade titanium minerals.

Employing more than 1,500 people, Sierra Rutile is one of the largest private employers in Sierra Leone. The Company ships standard grade rutile (SGR) directly to major customers worldwide, while industrial grade rutile (IGR) is distributed to welding markets from its Amsterdam warehouse. With the proposed Sembehun Project, Sierra Rutile is positioned for a future mine life of at least 15 years, underpinned by a completed Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS).
